JACKSON, Overlook. (AP) — A Mississippi civil legal rights attorney was arrested Saturday after filming a site visitors stop done by officers from a law enforcement office she is suing in federal court docket, her legal professional says.
Jill Collen Jefferson is the president of JULIAN, the civil rights business that filed a federal lawsuit past year towards the Lexington Law enforcement Section on behalf of a group of city citizens. Michael Carr, Jefferson’s lawyer, instructed The Associated Push she was arrested late Saturday night following she filmed officers following they pulled an individual over.
The Lexington Police Division did not immediately reply to ask for for remark in voicemails and cell phone calls.
Jefferson was arrested nine times following Assistant Lawyer Typical Kristen Clarke of the U.S. Division of Justice’s Civil Rights Division traveled to Lexington to fulfill with community members about allegations of law enforcement brutality in the modest town.
Jefferson’s lawsuit promises law enforcement have subjected Lexington citizens to wrong arrests, too much pressure and intimidation.
“As an advocate for her clientele, Jill Jefferson thinks that this pattern and exercise has transpired to citizens in Lexington,“ Carr stated. ”Through this knowledge, she is showing the condition, the spot and probably the country the corrupt techniques of this town.”
Carr stated Jefferson complied with a ask for to create identification and questioned why the officers had approached her as she filmed on a general public road. She was arrested and billed with a few misdemeanors: failure to comply, disorderly carry out and resisting arrest.
Jefferson was booked in the Holmes County Jail, where by she continues to be pending a courtroom listening to, which hadn’t been scheduled as of Sunday early morning.
Carr stated Law enforcement Main Charles Henderson at some point agreed to release her without putting up bond. But Jefferson refuses to pay out a $35 processing rate levied by the jail for her launch since she believes her arrest was unlawful.
